I plead no contest to a petty theft under $20 paid the ticket and paid nordstrom off. They sent me a letter saying they released me or something like that im not sure if that remained on my record it happened 2 years ago. Will this affect me if im applying for residency in the US and does this mean i have to answer yes if convicted of a crime on applications?? Please help?

When you stated that "they sent me a letter saying they released me or something like that,” were you referring to the court or to Nordstrom? If you were referencing the court that handled your criminal case, then you may have, in fact, pleaded "no contest" and received a "deferred disposition" sentence. In Texas, if you successfully complete the "deferral period" on a Class C misdemeanor, you are then released and the case is dismissed with no final conviction. Even better still, if this was the case, you would likely be eligible to have the records of the arrest "erased" by petitioning for an expunction of your criminal records in the appropriate district court. I hope this helps!

It will affect you. You must answer yes as you have been convicted of a crime and give them certified copies of court disposition. You like fall under petty offense exemption, but show a lawyer a record of your conviction to make sure www.immigrate2usa.com

No contest plea to a Class C Misdemeanor is still a minor conviction for a petty crime that must be disclosed on your immigration form to the questions of any convictions. Also, you have to obtain a certified disposition of that court matter from the respective clerk of the court that had jurisdiction over that case to show to the USCIS that the case has been adjudicated. For further procedural guidance with the application seek professional advice of an immigration attorney in Texas.
