Your credit score is affected when you do not pay debt obligations on time. The direct answer is yes, your credit will be affected by bankruptcy and a foreclosure. It does make renting more difficult because some landlords refuse to rent to anyone whose credit scores are below certain numbers. However, it is not impossible to find a rental, thousands of people do it every month.

If you file for bankruptcy and surrender the home to the lender, the foreclosure should not "double ding" your credit report. The debt to the lender will be shown as discharged in your bankruptcy. Of course, the lender will still need to get their collateral back through either a foreclosure action, short sale or deed in lieu of foreclosure. You do, however, need to keep a close eye on your credit report, as they can often have an incorrect reporting that you will need to fix post bankruptcy. As for renting an apartment, this will depend on the landlord. Corporate landlords may pull your credit report while others, such as an individual with one rental, will not pull it. If you show up with the security deposit and first month's rent, it will go a long way to securing new housing. Good Luck to you!
