Employer sent a collection notice for salary overpaid in 2009.

I worked for an employer in 2009, who, they claim, have overpaid $3,300. They sent to collection agency to recover the funds from me. Question - Can they do that? What is the consequence if I don't pay? Will it affect my credit?
If you ignore the letter, they may sue you to recover any overpayment. It will not effect your credit unless they get a judgment against you. You can write to the collection agency and demand copies of all papers showing the amount due. You can also call them to try and negotiate.
You should first demand in writing that the collection agency produce evidence of the alleged overpayment. That will let you decide whether there was, in fact, an overpayment or not. Thereafter, they may decide to take you to court, in which case you would have to decide on whether to contest or to negotiate a settlement. Good luck!
