Should i get a lawyer or a public defender to represent me in a simple assault and harassment case?

My ex boyfriend threw me through a second story window during an argument and hit me repeatedly. The only violent criminal history i have is a fight i had with my sister where we both received citations. In the case with my ex, i called the police and had to go to the hospital but they arrested us both. I know he has a lawyer and am wondering if my chances of avoiding probation, house arrest, community service, etc. would be lessened if i had an attorney instead of a public defender. I recently lost my jobs and have plans to move out of state to get away from this person so i am struggling financially as it is. What should i do?
Public defender's are attorneys and some can be very good. I think the most important thing is that you find someone that you can work with. Private attorneys have a lesser case load and can spend more one on one time with you. Regardless, find someone you are comfortable with. The more open you can be with them, the better they can help you.
There are good and poor public defenders much the same way there are good and poor private attorneys. If you can afford to hire an attorney you really won't have much choice in the matter and will be required to hire one if you wish to be represented. If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed to you.
First and foremost... Public defenders are attorneys. They have a law school education and as much, if not more, experience than many private attorneys. They "specialize" in criminal defense in the county where the charges are filed. They are in the courtroom everyday to assist individuals, just like you.
The differences is these:
A private attorney has the ability to limit the number of clients he accepts and is therefore, able to spend more time on your case.
A private attorney charges a fee for providing the legal services ranging from a few hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars.
You must financially qualify as an indigent to be represented by a public defender
