Can a subpoena be served by mail in CA?

My daughter's friend's mother has told her she has sent a subpoena and must be in court today. She has not received the subpoena at school, just been told. She doesn't want to get involved in a disputer for $$$ between her parents. Her mother claims she was forced to sign agreements under duress that would preclude her mother from receiving any $$ in the case of a divorce. Apparently the mom and daughters have been victims of violence by the father throughout their lives.

No, a subpoena must be personally served. However, I have in the past used the procedure which Mr. Lee describes.

Ms. Bennett is correct. In certain situations (usually at the request of the recipient), I have served a subpoena by mail after obtaining signed stipulation from the recipient that he has agreed to accept the subpoena by mail and that he agrees and affirms that such service has same force and effect as if the subpoena was personally served. These are exceptional situations. Moreover, it does not appear there is such a stipulation in your case.
