You are never obligated to admit to anything and you are always entitled to an attorney. I would caution you to never say or do anything concerning a criminal case without an attorney. Especially when the sheriff says you don't need one.

The sheriff should not have contacted you without your attorney nor should you have signed anything without your attorney. You should have called your attorney immediately upon contact by the sheriff.
