Can my employer disclose or confirm my social security number and private info with my bill collectors?

the lady in charge of payroll at my place of employment confirmed my social security number with a bill collector. she also gave out my "in case of emergency" contact phone number, which caused them to harrass a close friend. besides the poor business practice, is there any law that says she can or cannot confirm (not give out) my social security number or private information such as emergency contact?

Tennessee law does not generally prohibit employer disclosure of employee private information legislatively. However, if an employee can prove monetary damages resulting from such a disclosure then it may be possible to sue the employer. Due to this liability it is common for employers to refuse to disclose anything other than the fact that a person is an employee. In fact, it would be a best practice for an employer to treat all employee information in a confidential manner. There also is no federal protection. It should be noted that Tennessee state employees are protected against disclosure of private information. It is also likely that union members are contractually protected against such disclosure. I suggest you complain to HR or management and ask that they take measures to insure such disclosure doesn't happen again.
