i rented an apt from someone. they let me work off some of my rent. when i moved out they say i didn't work off all the rent. however i paid all my current rent that i owed (2 months worth) when i moved out. i told them i would give them ex. $100. they said that they thought it was less than that but never told me an amount. i gave them the money for the monthes i hadn't paid for yet. now they want more.

You wrote that you paid off all you owed--why did you agree to give an extra $100 if you paid off all your rent? Later you wrote that you still owe them money for months you didn' pay?? How long was your lease--month to month, or annual? Why didn't you get a written lease? Were the conditions in the apartment withing the standards acceptable under Alabama law? Verbal agreements are binding in most states (but not binding on leases of property greater than one year). But they are hard to prove in court. It sounds as if you are unsure what to pay, what you may owe, what you do owe. It sounds like your former landlord is no more sure about what you owe than you are--since neither of you seems to know what needs to be done--STOP PAYING until the two of you can figure out who owes what to whom.
