How long does it take to convert an L1B Visa to H1B VISA

I work with a company who has an office in our country, India as well as in the US. They sponsored me for an L1B Visa. Now I am working in the US office and another would like to sponsor me for an H1B visa. Can I work with the new company even my H1B is still pending?

The earliest you can be on H-1B and start work with the H-1B company is October 1, 2012.

Earliest start date on the H-1B will be October 1, 2012. If you qualify you can change status from L-1B to L-1A thus bypassing the PERM process and giving yourself an additional two years.
