In Texas, can I put my newborn child's last name as the father's on the birth certificate, even if we have never been married?

If so, what legal problems (e.g., benefits, registrations) might arise down the road for me in raising the child with the disparity in names between me and my child? There will not be an Acknowledgement of Paternity done at the hospital - we are going to establish paternity with genetic testing after the birth. We already have the child support and visitation order ready to be signed by the judge once the baby is born and paternity verified.
I do not see any legal problems. It seems to me that it would be appropriate, either way. The practical problems you may have are mostly related to having a different last name than your child, in terms of teachers, parents and your child's friends, at school. It is not a big deal, but there may be times when you feel "left out." If it is a girl, her name is likely to change again, in thr future, so it is not going to make that much difference.
