Is there a way to hide a criminal background from employers?
Anonymous2 views4 answers
I work as a computer programmer and have a few misdemeanors on my record (one from when I was 23 for computer tampering(I was charged with a felony but pleaded gulity to a misdemeanor) and then a few harassment convictions and violating an order of protection as few times. this prevents me from getting work. I think the harassment more so than the tampering because I use to be able to find work when it was just the tampering. I heard there is a way to hide this information from employers. it still stays on your record but employers wont know if the conviction doesnt directly effect your employment (in my case a crazy ex gf I use to deal with). A friend of a friend said this was possible and they did it for their job. Is there any thing that can be done to hide these charges from showing up
If you have a conviction you have a criminal record. NY does not expunge criminal convictions. If your potential employer does a background check it will show. Whether they can use it against you or not may depend on factors such as the correlation between the conviction and the type of work you would be doing etc.

Not be preachy here but isn't honesty the best policy if you have a job you are content with and want to stay with the company for the foreseeable future?
Perhaps it's just better to explain your minor record. Who hasn't had a nutty GF or BF in the past?
The computer related situation seems more problematic but you were quite young and you can emphasize that being a youthful error and your clean record since that time.
I don't think you would want to risk being "found out" and accused of not revealing your past, would you?
Far better for you to deliver this info than for someone else to do it.
Just my two centavos....
