I arrived in the United States in 1986, I was 9 years old. My parents were here illegaly and we never knew to register for selective service. I never got a letter saying to register. Fast foward, I got my green card 3 years ago, went back to school and got my high school diploma. I went to college and applied for a student loan and they denied my application because I did not register with sss. Is there anything I can do?

Go to: http://www.finaid.org/students/selectiveservice.phtml The very last question on the page: What If You Didn't Register and It's Now Too Late? You will find detailed information explaining you have to write a letter that shows by a preponderance of evidence that your failure to register was not knowing and willful. The term "preponderance of evidence" refers to the standard of proof used in civil litigation, where the evidence for a fact is of greater weight or more convincing than conflicting evidence. In other words, the probability that the assertion is true must be greater than 50%. The site also provides detailed explanations of "knowing" and "willful". Your schools financial aid counselor should be able to help you with this. I hope this helps! Good Luck!
