Do we need a lawyer to help expedite the deportation of a family member?

I have a family member who has an aggravated felony. I have talked to a couple of lawyers and they said there is nothing that can be done and he will be deported. Right now, he is incarcerated for a DUI. In a couple of weeks he will be turned over to ICE. Should we retain a lawyer to help him with the deportation process? I have heard horror stories of people moving to various jails from state to state and not getting a hearing for more than a year. Also, how do I find an experienced and trustworthy immigration lawyer?

As an aggravated felon, there is little that can be done to prevent your family member's deportation. However, sometimes there is a possibility that the underlying conviction can be attacked collaterally, then the basis for any deportation order is removed. A skilled attorney in "post-conviction relief" can better advise you on this question. This route is the only realistic option of preventing his ultimate removal. A good source for locating a skilled immigration attorney is at the AILA website [American Immigration Lawyers Association] http://www.ailalawyer.com/
