How do I change a charge that I've received deferred adjudication for?

I'm trying to join the Navy, but I have an Assault/Family Violence charge on my record for throwing a soccer ball at my brother. This happened awhile ago and I received deferred adjudication, but my recruiter told me that in order to join I would have to get the charge changed to something else. Is that possible to do, and what type of attorney would I need to talk to? Also, I'd like to add that my step-mom (who was the one that filed the charge against me) is willing to drop the charges against me.

When was the conviction? If your attorney did not tell you about the consequences of the plea, i.e. no military, you may be able to file a motion for past-conviction relief.
