Do employers have to honor school schedules?

I work for a Kaleida a big company in Buffalo, NY. I'm registering for school this fall and the managers are giving me the impression that if I have to go to class thats too bad and they don't have to give me the certain days off for school. Is this accurate? I thought in NYS employers had to honor school schedules. What are the laws regarding this?
