Are the I-551 Resident Alien Cards ok to travel with

2 views 3 answers
To whom it may concern! I have an I-551 Resident Alien Card since 1982 with no expiration date at all. I usually travel to Holland, Germany and England with it and when i return i have no issues. The immigration officers tell me that it would be better to get a new version because they need a more updated card, but it is not mandatory at this time. Well, it's been almost a year since i traveled. Is it still okay to use at this time?

As long as you have maintained your LPR status (did not abandon it by remaining outside the US for too long, did not get convicted of a "deportable" crime, etc.), the card should continue to be valid and you should be allowed to enter without problem. If the photo is outdated (ie. if you've visibly aged a lot since it was taken) you could experience delays while your identity is verified, but the document remains valid.

No problem to travel on your "forever" resident alien card. However, it is advisable to file for the new version of the LPR card, which you will need to do by filing Form I-90, and paying the filing fee, and taking fingerprints. The new LPR card will be valid for 10 years, and you will need to renew it each time before it expires. Better yet, apply for the United States citizenship if you are eligible.
