Can an insurance company release payment for medical bills to me directly?

I fell in a local supermarket last dec. The insurannce company agreed to pay my medical bills. The bills have been sent to collections because the length of time that has passed. I want to pay them directly but the agent is refusing to do that. I want to make sure my bills are paid. Do I have the right to receive payment so I can make sure my bills are paid? I am signing a release and want to make sure they get paid.

The insurance company for the story technically has no obligation to pay unless you sue and obtain a judgment against the supermarket. However, such stores typically have some no-fault insurance coverage which automatically pays some amount of medical bills. Insurance companies are generally wary of making direct payments, and instead prefer to pay the doctor directly. I do not know the language contained in the release you are signing, but these documents are often perilous.

If there is "no-fault" medical payments coverage that the store purchased, whether you pay or the insurance company pays directly probably will not matter. However, if this is a release being signed under a liability claim, then all sorts of problems can arise.
