Roughly how much should it cost to have a basic will and durable powers of attorney drawn up?

I have a relatively simple estate -- single, no kids, no crazy relatives hiding in the woodwork, no quirky assets (unless you count the dog) -- and prefer not to go the DIY Will route. I would like to know what is a reasonable amount to pay to have a will and durable medical and financial powers of attorney drawn up for someone like me with a relatively straightforward estate. I have updated all my beneficiary info on investment accounts. My net worth is less than $1 million. I have 20% equity in my home and, other than the mortgage, have no debts. Are we talking a couple hundred bucks or a couple thousand? And, really, would there much of a difference between the end product?

It's very difficult to answer your question because what you think might be "simple" might not really be so simple. Go to the Virginia State Bar website ( http://www.vsb.org/ ) and get some referrals. Make a few phone calls, talk to a few lawyers, and see if you can't find someone you can work with. I do not recommend the "do it yourself" route as many states have complex rules about witnessing wills, language, etc.
