What is the statute of limitation on claiming a life insurance death benefits claim?

I recently found some paper work of my late sister. In this paper work was a coupon book from a life insurance policy that she had paid in full for 6 months past death and including many months prior to death. She passed in 1993 and was paid in full until May 1994. Can I still collect from this policy?

I'm not aware of any such statute. The company will hold the policy until it's claimed. Call the insurance company. They should pay out to the named beneficiary.

I agree with Attorney Hutchins. When you call the insurance company they should instruct you as to what documentation you will need to provide. I wish you all the best.

I agree that it is simply best to just call and find out the claims process to see if you can claim it. It is possible that the policy wen too unclaimed property however but that might be a state law issue I cannot comment on. If you can't get a good answer you may want to look at the state unclaimed property site (where she resided).

Do you have a copy of the beneficiary designation under the policy? Your ability to collect under the policy would be dependent first on you being the named beneficiary. If there is not a named beneficiary it may be that the policy would then become an asset of your late sisters probate estate. I agree that you should contact the insurance company to determine what type of documentation they require to make the claim if the policy premiums were paid up at the time of your sister's death. Good luck.
