I appeared in court today, as i was supposed to, and the judge immediately said due to the first charge, VC-M 14601.2, he was going to plead not guilty for me and gave me another date to come back. Why is this?

The judge is telling you that yo may be facing jail time and that you should consult with an attorney to make sure that doesn't happen. Whenever you are facing jail time the judge is required to advise you of that and you have the right to an attorney. You may not get actual jail time but should certainly consult with a local attorney familiar with how that court and judge deals with similarly situated cases.

14601.2 is a serious offense with serious consequences... it relates specifically to the act of knowingly driving at a time when your privilege to drive has been suspended due to an alcohol event... i.e. DMV .08% suspension, or DUI conviction. There are many other reasons that a driver may be suspended that do not involve alcohol but while they are still serious, the consequences can be much less severe! Perhaps the judge did you the favor of allowing you the opportunity to seek counsel before you really put your foot in it !! Do not treat this charge lightly...

One other possibility, and I did not see this mentioned in the other answers, is that the judge may be giving you time to get your license reinstated. While I have not appeared in court on a case in San Bernadino County, it is very typical for the punishment to be siginificantly less if you are able to get your license reinstated prior to resolving the court case. You should really consider hiring an attorney who practices in the court your case is in.

This was because he is a good Judge. You are not charged with infractions. You have been charged with driving on suspended license because of a DUI. This carries serious consequences and should not be taken lightly. You need to get an attorney and see what can be done to eliminate or mitigate this case. A call is free and can save a lifetime of regret.
