Can an online merchant refuse to close my account at my request?

I am trying to close my account with a daily deal site. There is no option to do so when I log into my account. I contacted their customer support and was told that although I can unsubscribe from their emails, they cannot delete my account information. I emailed back that they were violating their own termination clause in their terms and conditions. Then they were magically able to remove my account from their system. Is what they are doing legal?

They do have to keep their records. It doesn't sound illegal. It sounds more like their customer service doesn't know what they're doing. Call them again and ask to speak with a supervisor and insist that they close your account. It's a free country. They can't force you to be their customer.

Could there be a communication gap here? It sounds like the site thinks you want to delete the information in your account, which is not what you want to do -- you want to close your account, and end the relationship -- not make all the information disappear. It seems like the customer service people could you a little more (ok, a lot more) training.
