What is the minimum sentence for felony vandalism?

I keyed a car and smashed a rear view mirror out of stupid jealous anger. I'm a student and I have no prior record, and I'm really scared of what's going to happen. I'm afraid I messed my life up and won't be able to get financial aid for school anymore.

My 2012 CJER, for PC 594(b)(1) indicates "Vandalism of $400 or more to have a range of: 16 - 24 - 36 months. So the minimum is 16 months. Get a lawyer immediately: (1) to become familiar with the case early; (2) to challenge the amount of damages; (3) to help with evaluating restitution.

The first thing you should know is that you should not make any statements about the facts of your case online, like you just did. You should not give any statements to the police or admit your actions or whereabouts to anyone. Second, assuming that you don't have an extensive criminal record, it is very doubtful that you will end up with a felony conviction. There are many possibilities to get your charges reduced or dismissed, but you dont do yourself any service by making public statements admitting the crime. If you have been charged with vandalism, you need to hire a good lawyer who can defend you and minimize the impact that this will have on your life. If you can't afford to hire a lawyer, the court will appoint counsel to represent you. I handle cases like yours in San Mateo County. Feel free to contact me about your case.
