I would still find a Bankruptcy Attorney in your town or local area. Maybe the local Chamber of Commerce has a list of attorneys who specialize in Bankruptcy. The attorney will help you through the Bankruptcy process, and you will pay the attorney through a schedule of payments that the Bankruptcy Court will approve. There are two Bankruptcy Courts in Massachusetts: Boston and Springfield. Be sure you feel comfortable with the attorney before you decide to let him work for you. You should be able to work with an attorney who will accept "installment" payments - that are reasonable for you - and that the Bankruptcy Court will approve.

This answer addresses the original question - but also corrects some statements in the prior answer. There are three Bankruptcy Courts in Massachusetts - Boston, Worcester and Springfield. Contrary to what might be viewed as popular belief, Bankruptcy is not an easy area of law that just involves filing out (correctly) a bunch of forms. It is a complex statutory scheme that enables deserving people to get a discharge of their debts (in chapter 7). Assuming you are income qualified, then you should be eligible for legal aid. If you are not income qualified, then you need to find out if you are eligible for reduced fee services from private lawyers who participate in such programs. The Boston, Worcester and Springfield bar associations all have lawyer referral services. The Boston Bar Association requires bankruptcy attorneys on the LRS panel to have a certain amount of experience and expertise. It also has the most active bankruptcy bar in the state. You'll find them on the web. I am aware of no Chamber of Commerce that offers any ABA approved lawyer referral service that is on par with the Boston Bar Association. Good luck, Bill McLeod

Attorney Mcleod has given some great suggestions as to where to find legal assistance if you are unable to pay for it. In addition to your local bar association you may wish to try the Massachusetts Justice Project or Legal Assistance Corporation of Central Massachusetts. Google them and I am sure you will find their phone number. If you don’t give me a call, I’ll get it for you. Good luck. Robert Kovacs
