Who is responsible for my deceased moms medical bills when there is no estate, no executor and no money?

My mom had some medical coverage through a county sponsored program which paid the majority of her stay but the hosp called me and left a message 3 months ago and left another message today asking what the plan was for her outstanding account. This is a non-profit hosp. I don't expect I am in any way responsible for any of her financial affairs since there is no will, no estate, and no money. She was on social security and had no life ins, no retirement, literally nothing except for a few thousand that went towards her funeral arrangements.

Generally, only the estate is liable for her debts. Family members are not liable for the debts unless the co-signed or guaranteed on any contracts. You are not responsible in most cases but should talk with an AZ estates attorney to be certain. Hope this helps. Please remember to designate a best answer to your question. Mr. Fromm is correct, unless of course you or some other family member signed your mom in to the hospital and in some way acknowledged that you would be responsible for her care. If that is the case you should immediately take those documents to an experienced attorney there in Tucson to review.
