Does divorce mediation only apply if there are children involved or does it also help with the division of assets and debts?

My wife and I recently attended conciliation court but it was determined that the divorce would proceed. We both have attended the mandatory parenting class and are going on to the next step in the process. I have not responded to the petition for dissolution because initially I had hoped we could mend our differences and reconcile.
My wife contacted a paralegal to prepare the divorce papers splitting the bills in 1/2 and splitting parenting time one week at a time for each of us. The children would stay in the original home and the parents would come and go on a weekly basis per the petition. I disagree with this arrangement. The other things mentioned on the divorce decree I am ok with.
Could mediation help or would i be better off seeking legal aide or some other sort of legal help?
If you have not already done so, the first thing you should do is seek a free consultation from an experienced family law attorney. You may or may not hire an attorney, but there are too many factors to consider in the scenario that you have outlined here to address or consider them all here.
There is absolutely no point in paying anyone to draw up any divorce decree until and unless you are in agreement on all of the issues.
The idea of keeping the family home and the parents rotating in/out each week has been tried and is rarely successful. Among the many reasons you will now be maintaining 3 residences instead of two. How many years until the youngest turns 18? Have you thought about the fact that you will likely both ultimately begin new relationships?

Mediation is a way to settle outstanding issues. Typically I prefer strongly that each party has an attorney advising them so they know what their rights are so that they don't end up negotiating themselves out of more than they would if they knew they could get a better deal in a litigation. Generally, though, if you are going to settle at the end of spending a fortune on lawyers and a protracted fight, why not skip that expensive step?
