My car was hit at an Oasis filling station- the other driver hit my door and damaged it as I was exiting my car to pump. Fault?

I was getting out of my car to fill up at the station when my door was clipped by a driver trying to get to the pump in front of me. He did some major damage to the door and is now saying that he was not at fault. I am going to get 3 quotes to give him, and I have his insurance info...should I also file a police report? And should I contact his insurance co. myself? Don't really want to inform my ins. co. b/c I don't want my rate to go up. Can you provide any info? Thanks.

The fault appears to lie with the other driver, but you want your insurer to pull the laboring oar for you. I am not sure, but I have had situations where a rate will not rise if the other driver is found 100% responsible. If you were injured, keep track of your medical information and 1) cooperate with an assigned attorney from your insurer and better yet, 2) hire your own attorney. I am in Chicago.
