There is not really much to my story. I just have a DWI and want to know if I can become a counselor?

This is not really a question for a criminal defense lawyer. It's really an "administrative law" question.

All licensing agencies in Texas will have regulations governing how and to whom licenses will be issued. The best way to answer your question is to contact the agency that governs your area of interest. They will provide you resources that will help determine if your DWI conviction will present a problem. Check out the articles linked below for more ideas.

I must disagree with my colleague from Bryan - I would not recommend calling the licensing agency directly. I would suggest instead that you consult with an attorney who practice involves administrative law and licensing issues. Depending on the nature of the DWI, it may or may not create issues related to becoming licensed in Texas and this is an answer that is best explored with legal representation, because there are issues that need to be addressed when applying for a license. If it is just a single DWI without any enhancements, there should be little problem, though you may have additional hoops to jump through. But if it is a felony or there are other issues that make it a serious issues, then there may be a problem getting licensed.
