How can I find out if a collection agency / law office is actually working for the original creditor. if it has been sold, legally can the collection/law office say they are representing the original creditor?

If the account was sold to a debt buyer, the account information on your credit report should say "transferred / sold" or a similar phrase. Sometimes, lenders forget to update the comments to include this statement after they've sold the account. So, if your credit report does not indicate that they sold your account, you could call the lender, indicate that you're receiving calls and don't want to get scammed so who owns the account. They'll probably tell you whether they sold it and who they sold it to. If the original creditor sold the account, the debt collector should not be telling you that they "represent" the original creditor.
