Require a lawyer knowledgable about Puerto Rico Inheritance law

My brothers and I live in USA. Atty in Puerto Rico sent POA for us to establish point of contact for info and signatory pertaining to inheritance. Notary public in NYC would not apply certified seal therefore we could not get the POA recorded and returned to Atty in PR How can we get this resolved so that there is a single POC for inheritors in NYC, an inheritor in FL and another inheritor in Texas. We have all experienced the same problem with notary.

I am not sure why a notary is handling this. You need to have a PR (and by that I mean Personal representative (or executor...whatever Puerto Rico calls them)), to be the POC for all beneficiaries. Is the attorney in PR acting as PR for the estate? If so, then HE/SHE is your point of contact. If you do not believe the attorney is acting in your best interests, you need to find another one. It is not the notary's fault if Puerto Rican law does not recognize his authority. In many places, you need to have documents authenticated by a consulate or embassy official. The notary is likely not getting paid for this, but certainly not enough to bear the brunt of your frustration. James Frederick

Go back to the PR attorney to alert him of the problem. He should offer another alternative. Hope this helps. Please remember to designate a best answer to your question.
