I got a ticket for parking in "No standing except commercial vehicles. 3 hours limit 7am-7pm". I misunderstood the sign.

I paid $9 for a 3 hours limit thinking I could park there with the commercial vehicles as long as I pay at the munimeter and after 30 minutes I received a ticket for $115! It was a very honest mistake, also it was my first time in NYC since I am a resident of NJ. Is there anyway for me to lower the ticket or dismissed it? I'm a student so it will take me awhile to pay that off with no income.

Plead not guilty and go to court to discuss this with the prosecutor. I understand that as a student your income lis limited, but you're gonna have to pay the ticket if you're guilty. Try asking the court to put you on a payment plan. Good luck with your case. If you want, you can schedule a consultation in person with an attorney before going to court so they can go over the ticket with you.

You need to speak to a NY attorney. But the tolls, gas, and parking to go to Court will likely be about as much as the fine.

I work as an ALJ in parking violations in NYC. The fact you misread the sign is not a defense. Your disabled vehicle claim maybe, however you need tow and repair receipts to document your claim. The AAA records will be a help. You can appear in person, by mail or on line. Good luck on your hearing.
