Can Ex-Landlord charge me for the cost to remodel the apartment i lived in for 6.5 years. To make it match the other units?

We lived there for 6.5 years, At the time we moved in our original landlords acknowledged that the carpet and floor and cabinetry needed to be remodeled like other units but they were making an acception for our need of a home. Remodel was never done during our time there I even offered to replace the flooring several times but they refused saying they were on it. They passed away last year and there son took over and we moved out because still nothing was done and we are now being charged for the whole remodel at cost of 5k but he was nice enough to give a normal wear & tear credit for 6 years + security and rent paid for 30 days even though we were out in 15 days. our original lease expired 8/13/07 no renewal just straight month to month payments after that.

Dear Tenant, No. He can't charge you for the remodel unless the "remodel" means he is only getting it back up to the state it was in when you moved in (less normal wear and tear) and he gave you an itemized list of what he is charging you for within 30 days of your lease termination. You just need to sit down with an attorney on this one. The guy needs a "nice" letter to explain to him what he can and can't do and then see where he takes if from there.

Your landlord can only withhold money from your security deposit to repair/clean the home back to the condition it was in when you took it over, forgiving normal wear and tear. 6.5 years is a lot of normal wear and tear in the first place - but a remodel having nothing to do with damage to the home is out of the question. He can't make you pay for that. Don't let him bully you. Feel free to call me - I help tenants with bad landlords every day.

Definitely not. Get a good l&t attorney and have him send a letter.if need be sue him for your security back
