Can I stay in the US with J2 status until final divorce will be finalized or I have to leave after legal separation?

I came to the US with J2 visa as a dependent of J1. I want a divorce now and would like to file for a legal separation and ask alimony and then file for divorce after 6 months separation. We live separately for last two months. We do not have any other ground for divorce. Can I stay in the US with J2 status until final divorce will be finalized or I have to leave after legal separation? It will be contested divorce and can take long time. I would appreciate any information. The lawyers I called could not answer this question for sure.

You will remain in J-2 status until your marriage to the J-1 holder is terminated. Your physical separation from your spouse should not influence your J-2 status.
