I bought a car and the financier the dealer promised fell through days later. The dealer stopped taking calls what should I do?

The dealership said the financing had worked out. I left $1500 down and took the car home. Days after the finance company called to say the loan would not be approved if I could not verify my income from last year. I explained I was self employed and my income had been somewhat unstable until recently. After seeing the dealer he assured me they would get financing. I've called the customer service number at the financier and been told the contract has been returned to the dealer. I've still got the car, but have no idea who is financing it and the dealer who is listed as the creditor/saler on the installment contract is not answering my calls. What do you advise?

Take all of your paperwork to a local attorney who deals with car purchases/finances. Your situation can get complex quickly.

At the risk of stating the obvious, you are going to have to make prompt arrangements for alternate financing, otherwise the dealership is going to eventually repossess the vehicle. Speak with your local banker about a car loan, or look for car financing offers on the internet. In the meantime, I recommend you keep your car in your garage, and not on the street or on your driveway, otherwise it is likely not to be there one morning.
