Using a fake address to send your kid to another school district- what are the consequences in Maryland?

Education Law 7 views 1 answers
I'm just wondering what would happen in Maryland public schools if a parent uses a false address so that their kid can go to a school in another county? In this case, the deception has gone on for about 4 years. What if that parent uses the same false address on their drivers license but has never lived at that address?

Greetings, in most cases, this is considered fraud. Consequences can include steep fines to pay back a school district, removing the student and/ or jail time for the parent. Although jail time does not generally occur, there have been a few notable cases in recent years, where parents were sentenced for enrolling their children in a non-domiciled school district. In determining which school is an appropriate boundary school, a school system will look at patterns, utility bills, leases, deeds and other documents to have reasonable proof that the child actually resides with the individuals and the location listed on the school record. A school also has the authority to conduct home visits to actually confirm a child's residence. When a child lives at two locations such in the case when the parents live in separate locations or the child lives with relatives certain parts of the year, etc. some accommodations may be able to be made. But the general rule is that the child must be domiciled in the actual school district he or she is attending.
