He needs a work permit, which he gets by filing an I-765 but it has to be accompanied by some sort of application for permissible status. You need to have an immigration attorney review his circumstances.

It sounds like he just entered as a Conditional Resident--someone who has residency based on a marriage which is less than two years old. Conditional residency is the same a full legal permanent residency, but for the fact that it expries in two years. That means a CR can live, work and travel like any other LPR. He can simply show proof of his admission as a CR as proof of eligibility to work. Remember that in two years, you will have to petition to remove the conditions on his residency, proving that it was a real marriage. If you are still together, the petition is joint; if things didn't work out, he can keep his residency so long as he can prove that the marriage was real (even if it didn't last). And finally, congratulations! I'm that was a long process and you are happy to finally have your husband with you in the United States.

Your husband was admitted to the U.S. as a permanent resident (conditional) based on his marriage to you and your petiton on his behalf. He does not need to apply for a work permit. He can work and travel as he sees fit. Just don't forget to "remove" the "condition" on his green card 3 MONTHS PRIOR to his green card's expiration date. Best to meet and consult with a lawyer now, to plan the removal of the condition on his residence.
