How long does it take to become a citizen?

Permanent resident for 3 years by next month. Married for 26 years and living together in a house we own in the US. Possibility to work overseas soon for a long time, which will make me lose my green card. After 3 years I can apply for an American passport but how long does that process take?

The process currently takes about 4 to 6 months. You will not loose your LPR status by working overseas if you take steps to preserve the status.

If you are in a valid marital union to a U.S. citizen, and have been so for 3 years, you will be eligible to apply for naturalization 3 years from the date you were granted Permanent Resident status. Current processing times for naturalization applications take about 4-6 months, depending on the location of filing. If you plan to work overseas for an extended period of time as a Permanent Resident, you can take steps to preserve your residence, if you do not move forward with the naturalization process. I would advise speaking to an experienced immigration attorney.
