Is cybersex/sexting/ between a 16 year old and an adult illegal if they live in different states?

Is it legal for a 19 year old in Texas to have cybersex with a 16 year old girl in Connecticut? They met online, where the 19 year old expressed interest in the girl, and they began a 2 month "relationship." With the intent to seduce her and manipulate her, he wrote her poems and told her he loved her. He did everything in his power to gain the girls' trust, seeking the thrill of watching her masturbate on a webcam with him. He pretended to want a future with her, speaking of possibly meeting in in the following year. He knew her age. There were thousands of texts exchanged full of sexual content. He asked her for sexually explicit pictures of herself, which she first protested to, but eventually gave in and sent him some. He later admitted that it was just a psychological game to him.

The legality has nothing to do with where they live relative to one another. The picture(s) could be a concern. For both. But if they are illegal, would bet the adult will be the one with the problem which could be federal. Contact the local FBI. Possession of certain types of photographs, especially of minors, can result in long periods of time and lifetime registration as a sex offender.

Possession of those photos is also bound to be illegal under Texas law, as well. It's possession o f kiddie porn. The CT state police and Fairfield police may know exactly what to do in terms of local law and coordination with TX and the Feds. CT may very well have jurisdiction, as CT was the recipient of the texts and calls. You might find the local version of a "Special Victims" unit more compatible with what I presume are your daughter's best interests, which should be your paramount concern as I'm sure they are. Talk to a professional counsellor about how best to handle it from that end.

Yes it is very much illegal. Certainly under federal law and most likely under state laws as well.
