Can you be forced to take an ambulance after a DUI/car wreck?

In 2003, I wrecked my car whilst under the influence of alcohol. Though my car was definitely totalled, I was unhurt, and when the cops arrived I told them not to call for an ambulance because a) I was not injured, and b) I did not wish to pay the enormous amount of money a hospital visit costs. Despite my protests, I was more or less forced into an ambulance. Was this a violation of my rights?

Nine years later and you are just getting around to asking about it?

I assume you're asking because they are still trying to collect, or you never paid and it's on your credit report as unpaid. Yes, you always have a right to decline medical treatment UNLESS it is an emergency roadside situation, and your judgment is impaired by alcohol, and your car has been "totalled" suggesting a serious impact and injuries. In California the Government Code allows emergency responders (police, fire, medical) to charge for services.
