Can I press charges after it has been six months since my ex boyfriend hit me?

In March of 2012 my ex boyfriend and I got together to talk after I ended the relationship. Things didnt go the way he wanted so he grabbed me by the neck kind of trying to choke me. i pushed him and told him not to ever grab me like that and thats when he slammed my head against the window inside the car and started punching me. I took pictures of my face and my hands. I have been scared of what he will do if i do make a report.
