Can I drive in Texas with a foreign driver's license (not international driver's license)?

I received a traffic citation in Tahoka, Texas and was cited for driving without a Texas driver's license. I am a Chinese national here on business and have a Chinese driver's license, but do not have a international driver's license. I will pay the fine, but am wondering if I am allowed to drive. I was able to rent a car from a rental company with my Chinese license on my last trip. Now, we have company cars, it is insured and I am on the policy. If I do need a license, is there any temporary license I can apply for? Thanks.
