Can I put my gas and electric bill in my 16 old daughters name

My soon to be ex-husband is not paying the utilities bill and the balance is up to 900.00. Can I put my 16 old daughters name on the bill at our new address? And do I have to make some kind of arrangements to pay the other bill? Our names are both on the bill, but I did not sigh anything when it was ordered. His is not co-operating with me on this and they are threating to shut it off. I have found a town house into which I am moving and I am afraid they will not let me a new account.

Most utilities require that the person whose name is on the lease or deed be the person who applies for utility service. Also, at 16, your daughter is not legally able to enter into contracts, so it's very unlikely the utility would allow a 16 year old to be on the account. You may need to make arrangements to pay off the old account, but they might be able to give you a payment agreement that would let you pay it off over time.

The utility will never let you get away with this. Further you should not use your child's credit for your benefit.

This is a domestic relations/family law issue, not an energy issue. Whoever owns the house is liable for the utilities. Your daughter is 16 and may not legally contract for anything. Don't even think about putting her in the middle of this. Divorces are ugly and bring out the worst in some people. Don't make it worse. You need your divorce lawyer to handle this.
