If I signed my lease but my landlord didn't is she still legally bound by the one I signed?

I have lived in my apartment for 2 years, on October 1, 2012 I went in to renew my lease which was for the same amount I have been paying. I had previously received a notice on my door with the anticipated rental amounts, which were the same i agreed to in the lease. A little while after signing my lease and paying my rent I was called and told my rent should have went up 80 dollars and that I needed to sign a new lease because the agent never signed it. Is this legal? Can landlords hold on to a lease that is unsigned by them so it is not legally binding on them?

While it does not sound illegal, it may not be something you want to do. I would make sure you get everything in writing.

In part it depends on what the lapse of time was that is encompassed in your phrase "a little while after". If LL did not sign it , you do not have a document reflecting the intent of both parties, ie. no lease agreement in place. If you do not agree to the new rate, don't sign the new lease. In most states, that would by default put you on a month to month lease that could be terminated by the LL or you, anytime, for any reason on 30 days notice (15 days in some states--check with a local attorney to see where your state falls on notice for month-to-month leases).
