A friend of mine recently filed for bankruptcy. Her lawyer never told her she'd have to turn over her tax return when she got it, so she spent it. Now she's been informed that she has 30 days to come up with that money or lose her property.

It is part of the bankruptcy estate. Oftentimes, a trustee will enter into an agreement to pay the amount over a period of time. Have your friend call the lawyer and ask if that may be an option.
