Is it illegal to snort your own prescription medicine?

You are prescribed a schedule III narcotic. You decide to crush and snort the pill as your preferred method of taking it. You are not taking more then what is prescribed and the prescription belongs to you. Obviously, this is considered abuse since the Dr. prescribed swallowing the pill but is abusing your own prescription considered illegal in the state of NJ?

Before I respond to your inquiry, I must state that we have not spoken, I have not reviewed the relevant documents and facts, and I do not represent you. Therefore, my discussion below is not a legal opinion, but is informational only. Finally, my discussion applies only to issues to which Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Federal law apply, unless otherwise specified. That being said, taking a prescription medicine in any way other than the intended method is a bad idea. Regardless of whether it is illegal or not, if your physician finds out, you will be terminated as a patient. Because the drugs are formulated for oral dose, they contain excipients and other chemicals meant to aid absorption through your stomach, and not your nose - and these chemicals may cause significant damage to you if not taken orally.
