The other party is seeking to have you held in contempt because they claim you did not comply with an instruction in a Court Order. The Order to show cause sets up a hearing so that you can explain to the Court whether or not their claim is true and if it is true why you did not comply. Even if you did willfully violate the prior order, if you are found in contempt you will be given an opportunity to "come clean" or rectify your situation. This is called a "purge condition". So, do not be afraid to go to the hearing, you are not going to be whisked off to jail right then and there. I see from the categories that yours may or may not be a family law matter. If it isn't, and the basis of the contempt request arises from a civil matter, it is possible that you were instructed to complete a Fact Information Sheet and provide information to the Plaintiff within 45 days from the entry of the judgment. Or, you may have been subpoenaed to attend a deposition and did not attend. Those are the most common reasons for show-cause orders to be issued when someone has a money judgment entered against them.

An Order to Show Cause is issued by the Court when there is reason to believe that a party has willfully ignored the prior orders of the Court. A hearing on the issue is your opportunity to explain why you should not be held in contempt of court. Chris Mulligan Law Office of Christopher S. Mulligan 161 E.
