Do I have to fix a dying tree and lawn?

Business 4 views 1 answers
Our landlord sent us a letter saying our front maple tree "looks bad" The tree is dying slowly of some kind of fungus. They tell us every year to water the lawn (which we do) but the ground is so hard packed that the water just goes off into the road. We have told them that it need aeration. Do we have to do this?

The tree in your yard is your landlord's problem, bottom line. Tenancies have evolved from the medieval model. These days, rather than being expected to repair complicated systems, you are required to advise your landlord, in writing, if you are having problems, rather than personally fixing the wiring or the water. You are not expected to be a master gardener or a certified electrician. You might want to write back to your landlord and advise them of your issues with the yard, and tell them that it does not make sense to water if the water just winds up in the road. They may elect to send a specialist over to look at the tree, see if they can get a diagnosis. If the tree is dangerous to life or property, and it has some disease process going on, it would be good to know that before it comes down on something you care about. Your obligation is to keep the place tidy, get rid of any trash/refuse, and keep the lawn (if any) under control. You are not required to become a gardener, unless your contract says you are going to. Hope this helps. Elizabeth Powell
