Can the FBI do this? Is this real or a prank?

I got a phone call recently saying it's from the FBI and the agent told me that one of my friends is involved in some kind of drug organized crime that's gang related. The agent just asked me if my friend ever mentioned anything about him being in a gang or any other specifics. It sounded a bit fishy to me because I thought that FBI don't make phone calls to potential witnesses or anyone who can provide information on their investigation. I thought they would always come to you in person instead. Is this legit or a prank call? I called my friend and he hasn't picked up. If it is a prank, wouldn't the FBI know about it since someone is impersonating them? Do the FBI ever phone call people for questioning? It seems a bit strange.

Do you have the name, position within the Agency, and the phone number of the person who called you? I assume you did not ask any. An agent usually gives you his/her contacts info. If so, you can easily double check the identity of the caller and verify if this is real. Ask the caller questions.

I would suggest getting in contact with your local FBI field office. If you find someone who can confirm the call was authentic i would recommend that you ask if you are under investigation and if so you should seek legal counsel immediately.

A similar thing happened to a friend of mine. She called the local office, and found out it was, in fact, a prank. Like m colleagues, I suggest calling to local office to be sure.
