Can my employer withhold my tips?

I work at a banquet facility in CT. My employer withholds any cash tips given by the wedding party, mother/father of the bride/groom, etc. that are intended to be distributed amongst front of the house staff. Their justification for keeping our tip money is that this allows them to pay us a better hourly wage. However, I'm fairly certain that they charge their clients for labor (# of staff multiplied by our hourly wage). Can they keep our tips?

This is an easy one. The answer is no. This behavior is unlawful. See this additional info from the Dept. of Labor: http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs15.htm#.UKFRVY5OTdm Call the federal or state dept. of labor or a local wage and hour attorney to assert your rights.
