I need to know if my land lord can ask me to move because he has decided he wants to move into my apartment. Washington state

I have been renting an apartment since August 2011. My rent is paid every month. He has never given me any kind of written notice for anything. He gave me a pay or move notice once, because HE lost the rent check. He gave me notice on 11-10-12 that says we must vacate by December 31st, 2012. I think I have just been on a month to month basis since my lease was up in August. Is that where I messed up?
If your lease term expired in August, then you are month-to-month. You didn't necessarily "mess up", you just didn't enter into another lease agreement.
In this case, your landlord has actually given you substantially more notice than is necessary to terminate the tenancy. You are required to vacate by December 31, 2012.
It is a no-fault notice that ends the tenancy, no reason necessary. If the notice was posted on your door but not handed to you, it is too late, as you would be entitled to an additional day when the notice is served by posting AND mailing. Landlords almost always forget to mail when they post.

All great information. Do keep in mind that even if you win in an eviction action due to faulty "post & mail" service of the notice, you will still end up with a case number that has your name on it. In Washington getting court files sealed or anonymized is virtually impossible. They are also public record and do not age off your background checks the same way as negative credit entries. This can make future efforts to obtain rental housing more difficult.
