I was arrested for diverting pain pills from pharmacy. I didnt think I would need attorney based on the fact i have no other record not even a speeding ticket. I now feel maybe I should have one when I go to court. Is it too late?

If you cannot afford an attorney the Sixth Amendment says one shall be appointed in a criminal matter.

That was a mistake, but yes you can ask the court for an attorney, and should do so at once. If the court finds you are not qualified (that is, not indigent), hire a criminal defense attorney.

You can apply for court appointed counsel at any time. Contact the clerk of courts at the court where you case is pending and they can give you information about how to proceed. You will likely need to make an appointment to meet with the court financial screener. They will take down some information and determine if you qualify for court appointed counsel.
